Yellow fluid from nose.

Species: Dog
Breed: Pug
Age: 8-11 years
Dr. Marie,

My male pug, aged 10, stuck with a piece of apple last night (29/1), I tried to pull it out with finger, but couldn’t, the apple might be going down, then I went to the vet immediately, took x-ray and checking. The vet said that windpipe and gullet were found nothing, that meant quite clean.

Then I went home, but few hours later, my pug was running nose with yellow fluid, then I went to the vet 2nd time, the vet said the symptom was normal and would be recovered by itself if stuck by something and after clean.

Finally, I left my dog at the hospital and went home, let them give my dog some treatment.

In the morning, I went to the vet again. The vet said the yellow fluid become less and clean, can eat, urinate, poo poo, no vomit with food and any fluid. So the vet gave me 10-day antibiotics to make sure the yellow fluid can be cured. The vet also said if I am still concerned with the symptom, I can go back to take X-ray again after finish the medicine.

I am wondering that my pug is in good condition? And his windpipe and gullet are good? He took the medicine and slept. Sometimes, yellow fluid is coming out. I know that it is at the early stage that the pug needs to take time to recover. I just want to make sure that my pug becomes good and healthy.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. It sounds like this was a scary situation!

I can think of a few possible reasons for the fluid. Sometimes, if an animal is choking, the lungs can produce fluid and yes, this fluid can come up through the nose. If this is what happened, then really he should just continue to improve and should be just fine.

Yellow fluid from the nose could be a sign of infection. It is possible that Yat Gor aspirated some apple which means that some of it went into his lungs. However, this seems less likely for a couple of reasons. First, infection would take a couple of days to set in. And secondly, he would be acting much more sick and probably wouldn't want to be eating.

It's also possible that there is a problem with one of his teeth. If there is a tooth root infection this can cause yellow pus to come out of the nose. It would be a strange coincidence for this to start happening immediately after the apple though.

As long as your dog is eating well and acting fine then I wouldn't be too worried. Here are some things to look for:

-a lot of coughing
-difficulty breathing
-lack of appetite

If you see those things then I would take him in right away.

I hope he continues to improve!

Dr. Marie.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.

According to your writing, he seems to become better. He seems good and gets some sleep now after medication. No coughing. Breathing is quite good and clear with less (sometimes no) water sound. He can eat (I gave less food because he was given when at hospital). But poo poo is not really hard, liquid mode, no blood, may be the food at hospital. Can urinate.

The yellow fluid is coming out when he sneezed unevenly then I clean it up. I want to know how long the yellow fluid will go away if keeping medication. You said Yat Gor aspirated some apple which means that some of it went into his lungs. Should he be taken some treatment such as endoscope to take out the apple if it happened unfortunately? When should I decide to have endoscope? After 10-day medication?

Dr. Marie replied:

It really sounds like he is doing well.

When I mentioned that he could have aspirated some apple into his lungs, this is just a possibility, meaning that it could have happened, but I am guessing that it did not happen. The reason why I think that it did not happen is because if it did he would probably be coughing a lot and not eating. If that starts happening then I would see your vet and they will likely take another xray to see if there are signs of aspiration pneumonia.

I am guessing that the fluid may last another day or two but it's hard to say.

Yat Gor is standing OK, but with little bit shaking with back legs, one or two times only, is it OK? He is asking me a clean teeth bone when I am going to work everyday, but I decide not giving him few days until he is good. He seems better this morning with less yellow fluid, I will come back to see him during lunch time. Hope he is good.

Dr. Marie replied:

Hmmm...I am having trouble connecting the shaking back legs with his other symptoms. The only thing I can think of that could connect yellow fluid from the nose and shaky back legs would be some type of a heart problem. But, if this was the case you should be noticing some coughing. Also, it would be hard to connect this with the apple incident.

If the legs get more wobbly then I would take him back to see the vet and ask the vet to check his heart.

Pugs can be prone to back problems and this can cause wobbly legs. Back problems can be very serious. If you feel that the legs are getting significantly more wobbly then I would take him in right away. In the meantime, just in case there is a back problem I would be careful not to let him jump or do stairs if possible.

I am glad to hear that the yellow fluid is decreasing. I hope he feels completely better soon!

I found Yat Gor is quite good with less yellow fluid afternoon. I should be happy for this.
But I am troublesome, his mouth smells bad because of the yellow fluid I think, so I brushed the teeth for him with swab very gently. Then he sneezed, I found slight blood coming out from his nose with yellow fluid. I feel sorry and regret. I couldn’t see any blood from his gums. May the antibiotics keep curing his blood and yellow fluid? I am unhappy that I did this too fast as he is sick right now.

Dr. Marie replied:

Now what you are describing sounds like either a dental infection or an infection in the nose. It is possible that some of the apple made its way into his nasal cavity and is causing problems. Or, it may be that the apple wasn't the cause of the problems after all. Maybe he had a dental infection all along.

Because you are seeing blood and pus I would recommend that you call your vet and perhaps see him or her again. The antibiotics that were given may not be the right type if this is actually a dental infection. If you are noticing a bad smell there is a good chance that there is some infection present that is not clearing up.
