Light colored diarrhea.

Species: Dog
Breed: Lab/Heeler/Aussie
Age: Less than 3 mon
Yesterday my husband and I purchased our new family addition and his brother. Last night,the first night, Beau had a watery, peanut butter, colored bowel movement in comparison to his brothers of the same age. I've given him the same food, Science Diet for Puppies, the medicine by Dr. Roy, a multivitamin. I've already began a schedule for our crate training and i take the boys outside every hour and a half. I took a trip to the store and upon my return home, Beau had messed up the crate with another watery bowel movement. What can you recommend over the counter to help with this concern of mine? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that your puppy is having diarrhea...that's no fun.

There are a number of things that can cause diarrhea. Sometimes it can be because of a parasite. Do you know if he has had deworming at all? If not you can use an over the counter dewormer that you can buy at the pet store. The directions will be on the container. Pups should have this type of dewormer given in two doses, 10-14 days apart.

Is the pup still bright and running around? If not, then I get concerned about more serious things. One example would be parvo virus. Parvo generally causes a very watery, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It can be treated but definitely needs veterinary care.

Another possibility is a type of parasite that is not killed by regular dewormers such as giardia or coccidia. Coccidia is possible as it usually produces a yellow/tan stool. The only way to know if one of these parasites is there is to have your vet analyze a sample in their lab. The only medicine to get rid of these is prescription medicine.

Unfortunately there is no over the counter medicine (other than the dewormer) that is safe to give to pups for diarrhea. For adult dogs I recommend a fasting period, but not for pups as they can get dehydrated quite quickly without eating. The best thing I can recommend is to continue with the food that he is on and give him small meals frequently. Be sure not to add any new foods or treats until his stools have been normal for a few days.

Often animals can get some diarrhea simply because the stress of being in a new environment. If this is the case then this should only be a very temporary thing.

However, if he is not improving after 24 hours, if you think he is not eating and looking sick or simply if you are concerned then a vet visit is a good idea.

Thanks a lot!!! I appreciate your quick response. He"s very active along with his brother. According to the pet store he's been dewormed, but since I didn't see it with my own eyes, I'll purchase a de-worming product and as soon as I finish chatting with you I'll look for a vet in my area. I just got the pups up to take them out for their plumbing session. Beau made it to the pad I placed by the front living room door. Her stool is flowing like a fountain and its blood tinged, less brown, but definitely bloody. I just wanted u to know and I'll find a vet ASAP for a RX. thanks.
