How to know when it is time for euthanasia.

Posted May 21st, 2009 by DrMarie

It’s often hard to know whether or not our pets are suffering.  I often get asked by clients how they will know when it is time to make the decision of euthanasia.

Here are some things that can help us in making our decision:

  • How is your pet’s appetite?  Generally if an animal is eating well, then they are feeling ok.  If your dog or cat does not want to eat then this can be a sign of pain or discomfort.
  • Does your pet still enjoy doing the things he or she used to enjoy?  If your dog is no longer able to go for walks, or your cat is no longer able to jump up on to her favourite chair then it may be a sign that he or she is not well.
  • What does your vet advise?  Often if we are having a hard time making a decision, our vet can give us valuable insight.
  • Does your pet have an incurable condition?  If so, we need to decide whether we are keeping them alive for our sake or for theirs.

For most of my clients, they just seem to know when it is time for euthanasia.  If you would like some input on your pet’s condition, I would love to help.  Just visit www.askavetquestion.com and I can give you some input on your cat or dog’s condition.
