Low fat diet for cats with diarrhea? New study says no.

veterinary news

The Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine has just published a study which was run in order to determine if it is helpful to lower the fat content of the diets of cats with chronic diarrhea.

When dogs have chronic diarrhea, we know that it is helpful to feed them a low fat diet.

In this study they recruited 55 cats who had a history of chronic diarrhea.  Half of the cats were fed low fat diets and half were fed high fat diets.  Their owners then kept records of the quality of their stools based on a scale of 0 (very watery)  to 100 (very firm).

While many of the cats did recover from their diarrhea, there was no statistical difference between the cats fed the low fat or high fat diet.
