Added May 7, 2012: Diamond incorrectly identified the production codes for affected lots. This article has been updated to reflect the proper codes.
Adding to the growing list of salmonella related dog food recalls, here is another. Canidae has announced a voluntary recall of several of their dog foods.
The foods are manufactured at the same plant as many Diamond pet foods that have been recalled with concerns for Salmonella contamination. For more information on this, read this article: Huge recall of several Diamond Brand dog and cat foods.
So far, we have not heard of any dogs eating Canidae that have gotten sick. Here is the official recall from the Canidae website.
The following lots are being recalled:
To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production code on their bag. If the code has both a “3” in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 10th or 11th position, the product is affected by the recall. The best-before dates for the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.
Following is an example of how to read the production code and best before date:
No canned foods or cat foods from Canidae have been recalled so far.
So far, I have not had any readers say that their dogs have been sick because of eating Canidae food. Do you feed Canidae? If so, please let us know if you think there is a problem. It is helpful if you state where you are located as well. Also, please share this post so that we can spread the word and prevent dogs from getting sick!
I just learned about the recall on Canadae dry dog food. I have an English Bulldog who I feed Canidae grain-free formula. About a month ago, I noticed that Chester repeatedly threw up after eating or drinking water. I immediately took him to the vet and received a prescription for antibiotics and an anti-inflamatory because the vet had noticed his throat was enflamed. We finished the course of treatment but Chester did not seem to improve. I purchase his food at a local pet store who had run out of the formula but was unaware of the recall. I was forced to put him on another dog food. Thank God. He is slowly getting better but has also developed a skin condition. I’m not sure if it is related.
My son had his boxer on it a few months ago n he had chronic diarrhea he has since switched to Blue grain free. I had an issue last year with my pup on Canidea same Problem wonder if it’s anything to do with this?
My dogs had been eating the Canidae formula with turkey, and the store had a sign that there was a shortage. All they had was the All Life Stages formula. They did fine on the first bag, but neither of them wants to eat the second bag, and both have vomited a bit. I intend to switch them to something else today.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the bag, so I can’t check the codes.
Purchased the chicken, turkey, lamb, rice all stage from Olys pet store. They mentioned nothing and I have no bag to refer to for those codes that have been posted. My old guy seems ok, but my 5month old Buuldog she is very gasy and it is bruttly stinky, her poop and my old guys seems really smelly and kinda loose. The bully got sick a few times but thought it was meds she was on for something else. Dunce reading this it concerns me I just happened to stumble across this article and know shat should I do??
Hi,
I purchased a bag of Canidae Platinum back in June from my local feed store. Apparently, the feedstore received no notice of the recall. I have two Golden Retrievers and a Chocolate Lab. The Retrievers refused to eat the food after the first couple of bowls, however the Lab continued to eat it. My Lab has had severe diarrhea since the Canidae (over a month now!) I have been to the vet twice and we still do not know what is causing the problem. I have spend $700 so far and am not amused by the fact that my dog most likely was sickened by Canidae Platinum. I am so very frustrated and upset over my dog at this point, with no answers from my vet and still watch my dog suffer with loose stools. Just appalling!
After 3 bags of ALS my dog (8months) will not touch it. He will not eat at all and will most likely starve beforte eating it again. First, he got sick and I gave canned food. I tried to switch back and he got sick again. The last bag was stock that came after the last recall so at first I wasn’t thinking the food was the issue.
I got him to eat some with canned food mixed but he got sick again. Now, he won’t eat raw steak if it is mixed with the food…but separate them and he inhales it!
With out a doubt, my dog (90 pound GSD puppy) has decided this food is simply poison and he will not get near it. I trust him, and certainly not the evil corporation that manufactures this garbage.
Just my take.

I won’t touch any food made by Diamond again. Do the research, they embody EVIL.
Just my take.
